A lot happens in a week… A Linux link, and an email from Joel

May 27, 2008

So, this last weekend, I heard two this that surprised me. My father, while on a trip in Russia with a friend, was mugged. He is fine, but basically all of his cash had been taken. And he isn’t supposed to return to Little Rock until later this week… So, I hope he is managing well with the rest of his trip. Second, my aunt passed away last Wednesday. I admit it has been a long time since I had last seen her, but my parents were good about trying to do things with she and her husband about once a month. It wasn’t quite “suddenly”, but quickly. She had gone into the hospital, and within about three days passed. They are waiting on my father to return from Russia to have the funeral.

Linux.com :: How everyone wins with open source software

This is a good article about how open source software, and some of the advantages of having a community to help debug and add to your software, rather than proprietary software.

My father once the argument for proprietary software saying: if it weren’t for proprietary software, and people who can make money from their work, then most of the software wouldn’t be developed. I think he was looking at if from the point of view of how Communism is a great idea IN THEORY, but falls apart because of human nature. I can understand that, but at the same time I think the computing world has a growing FOSS community. Granted, not all of the things from proprietary software is copied over in the the open source software, but at times the open source software is far superior.

Next, is an article that Joel forwarded to me (click the link for the rest of the article):

ascendancy will likely note that the great empowerment phase began in
