Installing zsnes on Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit

I figured I should do an update on this matter.  I'm not sure when they implemented the change, but you can easily install zsnes in the 64-bit versions of Ubuntu.  Simply run the following command:

sudo apt-get install zsnes

This will install everything needed for the program to run.  Happy retro gaming!

Ubuntu Server Reboot Issues

So, I know it's been a long time.  I had recently run into an issue with my home Ubuntu 13.04 server.  Since it is headless, no monitor attached, I use SSH to connect to it remotely over my LAN and over the web.  Recently I'd been having issues with reboots.  Since I had started using Ubuntu, when I wanted to reboot in the terminal, I would type:

 sudo reboot now

The reason behind this, the command always wanted a TIME value.  The last couple of times I ran this, my server would drop into Single User Mode, root, instead of doing a full reboot.  After some Googling, I found this Launchpad link. It seems at some point, the requirement of the TIME value was removed for the reboot command.  The last message in the Launchpad bug report states that the shutdown command TIME argument is optional, but that's not doesn't appear to be true.  Here are the results:

example@hostname:~$ sudo shutdown -P
[sudo] password for example:
shutdown: time expected
Try `shutdown --help' for more information.
example@hostname:~$ sudo shutdown -r
shutdown: time expected
Try `shutdown --help' for more information.

So much for that.  But if you add the "now" option for the TIME argument, it will reboot without a hitch.  Thus, depending on if you like to/automatically add the TIME argument then use:

sudo shutdown -r now

Or you can use:

sudo reboot

Installing zsnes on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit

After a bit of experimentation, I was able to get the program install.

***Disclaimer: Using this method removed the following packages I had installed: gmusicbrowser, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, libao-common, libao-dev, libao4, libmjpegtools-1.9, libsdl1.2-dev, libsdl1.2debian, libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, mpg321, mplayer, smplayer, smplayer-themes, smplayer-translations, and ubuntu-desktop. Your mileage may vary.***

In a terminal type the following commands to get the build dependencies for zsnes:

sudo apt-get build-dep zsnes

The following command will install zsnes and remove, and it removed the packages listed in the disclaimer:

sudo apt-get install zsnes

I ran the program to ensure it was install properly, but I have yet to test it out with a ROM. I'll update this post once I have.

*Update 10/31/2011* The program did run ROMs.  However, I have since removed it and re-installed the previously removed packages.
