My father, while on a trip in Russia with a friend, was mugged. He is fine, but basically all of his cash had been taken. And he isn’t supposed to return to Little Rock until later this week… So, I hope he is managing well with the rest of his trip. Second, my aunt passed away last Wednesday. I admit it has been a long time since I had last seen her, but my parents were good about trying to do things with she and her husband about once a month. It wasn’t quite “suddenly”, but quickly. She had gone into the hospital, and within about three days passed. They are waiting on my father to return from Russia to have the funeral.

This is a good article about how open source software, and some of the advantages of having a community to help debug and add to your software, rather than proprietary software.

My father once the argument for proprietary software saying: if it weren’t for proprietary software, and people who can make money from their work, then most of the software wouldn’t be developed. I think he was looking at if from the point of view of how Communism is a great idea IN THEORY, but falls apart because of human nature. I can understand that, but at the same time I think the computing world has a growing FOSS community. Granted, not all of the things from proprietary software is copied over in the the open source software, but at times the open source software is far superior.

I reordered them, somewhat, into galleries by year, and then by event. Take a peek. I even have some new ones up under 2008.

Now, I need to get to packing for my trip home. Also, I need to fix some of the havoc that reaped my Ubuntu box on the upgrade from Gusty Gibbon to Hardy Heron… I think it is mainly tweaks having to do with the graphics driver I installed myself. Also, I am not sure if the wireless is up on it yet… Oh well… Tweaking never really ends in the land of Linux.

I am slowly making head way to get the other photos up. I think the old pictures that I used to have on the old friends section of my site, will just be one huge gallery (mainly be being lazy). I don’t know too many people who would be viewing that area often enough to have me organize it a bit more…

I pay a pretty penny for this site, don’t really use the bandwidth nor the space. So, I may be moving my post from my LiveJournal over here, as well as my photos. That would make it easier for people to come to this site. Also, it will save me a little bit of money from paying for LJ when I am paying more for my own site.

For my “geeky” friends: the blog is running WordPress 2.5, and the photo gallery (nothing there yet) is running Zenphoto 1.1.5. I have the ability to add other users on the site, but don’t know it that option will be used at the moment (maybe I can get Dad blogging). Both the blog and photo gallery have RSS feeds (If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry about it).

The two downsides are: 1) I lose the text messaging (only one person has sent one), and 2) I lose the integration that LJ has with my photo gallery.
